Ukrainian nationalists commemorate massacre of Yanova Dolina

On April 24 2014 Ukrainian nationalists, mostly members of the fascist Right Sector and Svoboda party, commemorated the perpetrators of the massacre of Yanova Dolina.

Seventy-one years ago, 600 Poles were murdered by the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) in what is now Bazaltovoye. The massacre marked the beginning of ethnic cleansing in what is now western Ukraine, where tens of thousands of Poles were killed within a few months. Today the political successor of the UPA celebrates this mass murder as one of the “greatest victories over the Polish-German occupation.”

From April 1943 until their defeat at the hands of the Red Army in late 1944, the UPA carried out numerous massacres of the Polish population in western Ukraine. Together with the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) led by Stepan Bandera, the UPA sought to exploit the retreat of the German army to increase its influence in the provinces of Volhynia (today the region around Lusk) and Eastern Galicia (today the region around Lviv). The aim was to create a bourgeois Ukrainian state, independent from both the Soviet Union and Poland.

The UPA served as a military executive organ of the OUN. It was founded in the spring of 1943 and recruited primarily from Nazi collaborators who were previously active in the SS. The leadership and organization of the massacre of the Poles fell to Dmytro Klyachkivsky, the first commander of the UPA.

Klyachkivsky’s battle cry was, “We should undertake the great action of the liquidation of the Polish element. As the German armies withdraw, we should take advantage of this convenient moment for liquidating the entire male population from the age of 16 up to 60 years. We cannot lose this fight, and it is necessary at all costs to weaken Polish forces. In reality the UPA liquidated not just men but the entire population. The massacres began in Yanova Dolina in Volhynia.

The village was constructed in the late 1920s for the workers of a nearby basalt quarry. The population grew rapidly after the opening of the quarry in 1929. In 1939 the population of Yanova Dolina totaled over 2,000 people, 97 percent of whom were Polish.

From 1921 to 1939 Volhynia was part of the Second Republic of Poland. After the invasion of the Red Army in 1939 the region became part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.

The massacre of Yanova Dolina took place on the night of April 22, 1943.

UPA soldiers led by Ivan Łytwyńczuk invaded the village and brutally murdered the remaining 600 Poles in the manner of the atrocities carried out by the Nazis. Then the assailants burnt the village to the ground. In the months following, between 40,000 and 60,000 Poles died at the hands of the UPA in Volhynia alone. In Eastern Galicia the total of victims was over 30,000.

Two memorials commemorated in May 2014 the massacre of Yanova Dolina.

One is dedicated to the Polish victims, while the other boasts of the “blow for freedom struck by the UPA against the Polish-German occupation”. The latter was the scene of the celebration by Svoboda a week before.

This action speaks volumes about the character of the transitional government in Kiev.

The regime came to power February 22 as the result of a coup d’état with the help of the paramilitary thugs of the Right Sector and with the support of the West. Three ministries are occupied by leading members of Svoboda.

Both the Polish and German media have failed to report the memorial march for the mass murderers of 1943. Berlin works closely with the Kiev government and helped organize the coup in February.

The same applies to Warsaw. Although almost all of the victims of the massacre were Poles the Polish government regards it politically inopportune to protest against the glorification of the killers.

Lets not forget though, that the Polish government isn’t ETHNICALLY Polish.

“Genocide and Rescue in Wolyn: Recollections of the Ukrainian Nationalist Ethnic Cleansing Campaign Against the Poles During World War II “

is a book written by Tadeusz Piotrowski, a native of Wolyn, who lived under both the Soviet and the German occupation of Poland’s eastern territories until August 1943.

After the German and Soviet invasions of Poland during World War II, the Polish Christian residents of the province of Wolyn were subjected to a policy of systemic genocide by Ukrainian Nationalists.

Piotrowski’s family’s home was burned to the ground and his relatives were killed. Each of the book’s chapters represents one of the counties in Wolyn province. In interviews, survivors tell of the brutal torture and murder of thousands of Poles. Polish wives and their “half-Polish” children were murdered by their Ukrainian husbands and fathers. Some Ukrainian clergymen not only actively supported the Nationalists, they also participated in the atrocities. Yet some Ukrainians risked their lives to help save the Poles. These accounts, relatively free of rancour and bitterness, vividly document a terrifying episode in history.

This book tells us about a well hidden secret that Ukrainian historians tried to suppress for a long time. And they had plenty of allies in doing this. Today, there are no Polish village communities in Wolyn and East Galicia (Ukraine), in opposition to numerous Polish communities in Belarus and Lithuania which exist. Piotrowski explains why this is so. All because of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, organizations that orchestrated a genocidal campaign to wipe out the Poles of Wolyn and East Galicia. Interestingly enough, it was not even Stalin that destroyed completely the Poles of Wolyn. Despite expulsions from Belarus, Poles survived there. In Ukraine, specifically in Wolyn and East Galicia, the Poles were largely murdered in their homes and later the Soviet expulsion was accompanied by the OUN-UPA terror in the form of collective murders in order to force the remnants of the Polish community from the territory.

Massive amount of historical material proves that UPA-OUN committed crimes on women and children that would put Hitler’s SS to shame (a hedgehog into pregnant woman’s womb, cutting a man in half, hanging children by barbed wire around their necks etc). Arguments that these massacres of Polish peasants (about 60.000 people – mostly woman and children) were provoked by Polish attacks doesn’t hold the water for anybody who know a little bit of history and demographics of that region. Polish elites had been already deported to Siberia by Stalin’s order and Poles (mostly peasants) constituted only 16% of ethnic mosaics there. Additionally they were under oppressive Nazi rule. How these people could attack anybody? Only UPA-OUN whitewashers would know. Besides, the most recent atrocities of today committed by the Ukrainians from Maidan in Eastern Ukraine on the mainly Russian innocent population proves again their evil character. There is no question who is the real perpetrator here. Certainly not the Russian army and not Putin. It’s the judeo-nazi-bandera thugs killing on orders from the jewish oligarchs!!! No doubts about it at all!!

Piotrowski tells us of the unspeakably brutal murder of Poles by Ukrainian nationalists. The barbarity is difficult to fathom, and is rivaled only by the mendacity of Ukrainian reviewers who try to divert the blame to Polish victims as they attempt to divert the blame today on Putin and his army.

It is obvious that, to some Ukrainians even today, the disembowelling of a Polish child, or the putting out of the eyes of a Polish woman, by the cowardly UPA cut-throats (REZUNY),was a great patriotic act, as it was the crucification of a three years old child just recently in Eastern Ukraine.

Despite mutual nationalistic tensions, the Ukrainians in prewar Poland enjoyed a considerable degree of cultural autonomy, and even had representatives in the Polish parliament. The so-called pacification of 1932, in reprisal for earlier Ukrainian acts of sabotage, murder, and arson, involved the deaths of only some 32 Ukrainians. During this same time, Stalin was starving some 7 million Ukrainians, amongst which were also Poles (1.5 Millions of them died), yet the OUN was not planning genocide against Russians because of this at all. Without doubt, both the Germans and Russians committed far, far graver wrongs against the Ukrainian people, by ANY standard, than did the Poles, yet the Ukrainian nationalists did not lash out with open genocide against either Germans or Russians.

Why? Because they let them take the Polish territories and genocide the Polish elite, which could be too dangerous for the Soviets or Germans nazis to counterattack and lead the Polish nations to victory some day. They also knew that Poles were too ethically-minded to retaliate with a counter-genocide. Whereas both the Russians and Germans would see to it that Ukrainians were hanging from every tree no sooner than the cowardly UPA bandits attempted genocide on them. Professor Piotrowski documents that the UPA’s interests waging a ruthless war of extermination against Polish villages in Volhynia by killing men, women and children of Polish nationality and burning down their settlements was in hope to create an ethnically pure Ukrainian region. Unsurprisingly, they also attacked Jews. Interestingly, the UPA systematically terrorized the Ukrainian population as well, more or less forcing the local peasants to enlist in the UPA on pain of death. Naturally, they also killed Ukrainians who were brave enough to aid the Poles. Finally, UPA also forced two competing nationalist groups, OUN-M and another “UPA”, to join their forces. The leader of the other “UPA”, Taras Bulba, complained that the UPA spend more time attacking Polish civilians than waging a war against Communists and Nazis!

“Genocide and rescue in Wolyn” contains both eye witness accounts of the massacres, county by county, a general historical overview of the OUN-B and the UPA, and excerpts from various contemporary documents.
