Poland is a blindspot in Western WWII historiography: Roger Moorhouse

The tragedy of September 1939 is often overlooked, as, in general, the Polish historiography is a blindspot in the Western WWII narrative, British historian Roger Moorhouse told Poland IN. His book “First to Fight: The Polish War 1939”, published in the UK last year, is the first account in English of the fall of Poland in nearly five decades.

Mr Moorhouse recalled that even major productions, such as the BBC’s World At War, hardly mentions Poland in any other context than in the Nazi German invasion of 1939, omitting great persons such as general Stanisław Maczek and general Stanisław Sosabowski who fought alongside Western allies in Europe.

In his opinion, the reason for such a state of affairs could be that the Polish WWII historiography is “a part of a narrative of the war that does not fit with the wider Western narrative,” being stuck between this one and the German/Russian one, thus being overlooked.

Analysing the situation of Poland in the wake of the WWII outbreak, Mr Moorhouse pointed out that the Polish state was geopolitically damned, as it was situated between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union – both totalitarian and revisionist regimes, both shared animosity towards Poland. Furthermore, it has no natural defences as it was then located on the North European Plain.

Roger Moorhouse also touches on several other aspects of the September 1939 campaign, such as the course of the events, the role of Slovakia as a German ally, the attitude of Great Britain and France, the Soviet invasion, as well as facts and myths about the Polish military equipment.

What we are seeing today is historical revisionism and shifting the blame onto the Polish.

One strategy has been that of manipulating the actions of the Polish Blue Police. The claim is that they were outright murderers and killed Jews with glee. Jan Grabowski writes about this, but much of it is fabrication and modern history and sources are taken from unreliable witnesses. Who they should be looking at and judging actually are the Judenrat and the Jewish Ghetto Police, but that takes away having to face accountability.

This uncomfortable and tragic history should finally be addressed so we can move forward and accept what happened.

The continuous manipulation of history is just a shameful attempt to hide crimes, it needs to stop.

Here are some facts about the Polish Blue Police that you may find interesting and informative.

The Blue Police officially came into being on on the 30th of October 1939 when Germany drafted Poland’s prewar state police officers (Policja Państwowa), organizing local units with German leadership.The policemen were to report for duty or face the death penalty.The Encyclopedia of the Holocaust reports its manpower as 8,700 in February 1940 and states that it reached its peak in 1943 with 16,000 members.

The Blue Police consisted primarily of Poles and Polish speaking Ukrainians from the eastern parts of the General Government. The role of the Blue Police in its collaboration and resistance towards the Germans is difficult to assess as a whole, and is often a matter of dispute.

On June 3, 1942 during a prison execution of 110 Jews in Warsaw, members of the Blue Police stood and wept, while the Germans themselves executed the victims, after the Poles refused to obey the orders of their overseers to carry out the shooting.

According to Szymon Datner, “The Polish police were employed in a very marginal way, in what I would call keeping order.

I must state with all decisiveness that more than 90% of that terrifying, murderous work was carried out by the Germans, with no Polish participation whatsoever.”A substantial part of the police belonged to the Polish underground resistance Home Army, mostly its counterintelligence and National Security Corps. Some estimates are as high of 50%.

Piotrowski writes that, despite scathing criticism from Emanuel Ringelblum, the Blue Police are known to have refused German orders often “shouting in the streets and breaking doors to give people time to escape or hide”. Officers who disobeyed German orders did so at the risk of death. Some who acted against orders were eventually recognized as Polish Righteous among the Nations.

Warsaw was the biggest city in the Generalgouvernement, so the position of commander of the Warsaw police was the most important post available to an ethnic Pole in German-occupied Poland. Its first chief, Marian Kozielewski (Jan Karski’s brother), was imprisoned by the Germans and sent to Auschwitz concentration camp. Its next chief, Aleksander Reszczyński, was murdered in 1943 by the communist Gwardia Ludowa; 1977 research in the Polish Government-in-Exile archives revealed that Reszczyński was a member of the underground who gave the Polish Home Army invaluable intelligence.

September 12, 1939:

French-British conference in Abbeville, France — Poland betrayed: “Too late to send troops to help Poland”, they decide.

September 1944 — Abbeville is liberated by the Poles.

The Polish experience and genocide is largely forgotten and ignored.

With the German expansion in 1939, the Polish were the first victims. They were being mass murdered at a 9/10 higher rate than the Jewish population (Poles were actually hiding in the Ghetto pretending to be Jews to avoid roundups and executions) until the implementation of the Final Solution in late 1941.

This action was called General Plan OST, which was meant to obtain living space for the German and Austrian people.

Hardly any Poles ever collaborated with the invaders, it was the minorities that lived in Poland that were eager to do so. And still the Poles, with the Christian motivation went to great lengths to save their minorities, particularly Jews at the expense of the punishment being execution of themselves and their whole family and in some instances the village.

This punishment was only in Poland (there must be a reason). In fact, without Poles the Warsaw Ghetto would have starved to death in a matter of months. This, still, even though many Jews themselves were prejudiced against the Polish and felt in many ways superior, obviously now, they had to set that aside, but this sentiment still exists and plays out through revisionist history.

200,000 Polish children were also kidnapped and millions were taken for slaves never to return. Polish historians estimate 3 million ethnic Poles were murdered through genocide in Poland and 2.7 million Jews. More people were murdered in the Warsaw Uprising (up to 200,000) than Hiroshima and Nagasaki, yet hardly anyone knows of this.

Most people only know of the Ghetto Uprising in which very few were even involved.

With the Soviet invasion that happened weeks later in conjunction with the Germans, Poles were also murdered and deported with the help of their neighbors, estimated at 1.7 million were sent to Siberia with 1/3rd surviving.

The Soviets had been targeting Poles for years. In 1937 – 1938 in the Polish action they murdered up to 200,00 innocent Poles.This decimation and genocide is hardly known in the Western world or even in most of the world in general. We cannot know for sure the total loss of the Polish nation, but estimates up to 19 percent.
