Wola massacre
♦“What am I supposed to do with civilians? I have more prisoners than bullets,” reported Gen. Heinz Reinefarth, the commanding officer of German troops in the Wola District of Warsaw during Warsaw Uprising in 1944. It was his soldiers who put the district residents through sheer hell. A unit that gained particular notoriety for its cruelty was that of Oskar #Dirlewanger.
#OTD 75 years ago mass executions of Wola inhabitants commenced, ultimately claiming 40,000 to 60,000 lives.
After the war #Reinefarth was elected a mayor of a German town of Westerland, as well as representative in the Landtag, a local legislative body.
