The Polish PO- PIS coalition passed a resolution allowing to introduce CETA.
For the Polish Citizens there is an awakening time regarding CETA. The controversial agreement between Canada and European Union gains more and more opponents.
Within the last few days the petition of Akcja Demokracja ( under www.akcjademokracja.pl/ceta) reached over 60 thousand new signatures. Our initiative was launched in April but the massive support can be observed especially in the recent time. We start our big demonstration against CETA and TTIP free trade agreements on the 15th October, in front of the Ministry of Agriculture.
Today at 1 p.m. the Sejm passed a resolution allowing the CETA agreement to be deemed temporarily in force without waiting for the ratification from all EU member states. Two Polish leading parties – The Law and Justice and The Civic Platform voted in favour of the resolution. Maria Świetlik – the campaigner of Akcja Demokracja comments: „ Contrary to their previous declarations promising to protect Polish agriculture and food PIS announced the full support for introducing CETA. We have done all what we could to convince the deputies, that there is an urgent need for a public debate about CETA before its potential ratification. Unfortunately the exotic coalition of three parties has decided, that this extremely dangerous agreement becomes effective – just over the heads of the citizens.“ On one hand the resolution stipulates, that the ratification shall be possible only upon the consent of 2/3 of Sejm deputies which means that the competency of the state authority agency shall be passed to international institutions but on the other hand we have an approval to pass this competency even earlier – in form of the so called „ temporary introduction“ . „ I am not surprised, that the citizens are outraged“ Maria Świetlik adds.
Three parties voted against the resolution: PSL, Nowoczesna and Kukiz‘15
Every day about 10 thousand people sign the petition directed to the Polish government calling for full and clear exclusion from the TTIP and CETA agreements all aspects which have a negative influence on both the traditional family farming and the ecological farming as well as on the high quality and security of Polish food. Nearly 8 thousand people declared their participation in the demonstration scheduled fort he 15th October whereas another 25 thousand confirmed their interest in this event.
The manifesto is organized by the commitee in the panel of: Akcja Demokracja ( Action Democracy), Instytut Globalnej Odpowiedzialności ( Institute of Global Responsibility), OPZZ Rolników i Organizacji Rolniczych ( All- Poland Alliance of Farmers’ Trade Unions and Farmers‘ Organizations) , Strefa Zieleni ( The Green Zone). The participation has also been confirmed by the following organizations and parties: Partia Razem ( Together Party), Inicjatywa Polska ( Initiative of Poland), Centrum Zrównoważonego Rozwoju ( Center for Sustainable Development), Polska wolna od GMO ( GMO free Poland) , Inicjatywa Firm Rodzinnych ( Initiative of Family Firms) and związek zawodowy Inicjatywa Pracownicza ( Trade Union – Workers’ Initiative).
The Council of the European Union consisting of the ministers of all member states plans to sign CETA on the 18th October. Poland will be represented by the head of the Ministryof Foreign Affairs, Witold Waszczykowski.
CETA ( free trade agreement between UE- Canada) together with TTIP ( the agreement between UE- USA) aim at creating a transatlantic zone of free trade. CETA is ready to be signed whereas the negotiations regarding TTIP are ongoing although many countries have already announced to block the adoption of this agreement. CETA is then the crucial agreement for big businesses. Just the opposite for the citizens on both sides of Atlantic who aim at blocking this agreement.
