Could the ukrainian neo-nazis be, in fact, the descendants of German settlers?
Dozens of smaller and larger allied troops were created in Ukraine during WW2 as part of the Waffen-SS, composed of representatives of almost all the nations in Europe. The most controversy has always aroused the appointment of the Ukrainian division “Galizien”. Were the Germans so desperate to recruit despised by them Slavs? Or perhaps …they did not consider those Ukrainians as Slavs?
During the war, when the Nazi empire gradually broadened its borders, the Germans had to face the increasing problems of population. The Reich had almost 70 million inhabitants, which was far too little to secure the complete control of the entire continent. However, the Nazi ideology allowed the use of ‘other’ Aryans for this purposes .
In accordance with German pseudo-science it was easy to prove that the Aryans race also included Norwegians, Swedes, Danes and Swiss. There was no major problems to include as well the Germanic family of some French.
However, it that did not stop there. The SS Recruitment Headquarters, headed by Gottlob Berger got the task of searching for Germanic blood all over Europe! That’s exactly how the pseudo-experts employed by this office found Estonians as Germanized people, and Latvians as partly Germanic (even though the Lithuanians already got the label of “polonized” subhumans). Bosnians were described as “Gothic” people as well, who derived from the Persians.
Such findings led to the formation of Latvian, Estonian and Bosnian Waffen-SS. From the perspective of the SS all units were Germanic, not foreign. A very similar case was with the Ukrainians too. The main architect in creating Ukrainian Waffen-SS was Otto von Wächter, a Nazi apparatchik of Austrian nationality, who since February 1942, has served as the District Governor-General of the Galician Government.
The very fact of creating such district reflected the popular among Nazis opinion on Galicia and its certain inhabitants.
Poles considered Galicia an artificial construct created as a justification for the partitions of Polish Republic at the end of eighteenth century. The Nazis, however, looked at this issue differently.
As Christopher Hale had explained in his book “Hitler’s executioners. The Dirty secret of Europe “, the so-called Office for Race and Settlement the SS ‘experts’ were convinced, that about 25 percent of Ruthenian population (meaning Ukrainians) had a significant number of Germanic blood in them, which suggests they were the descendant of German settlers living as occupiers in partitioned Polish territories, for Ukraine as a State never existed!
The 25 percent had resided just in Galicia: the former country crown of Austria, which in the opinion of Nazis enjoyed the “German” statehood since the Middle Ages.
Therefore, Galicia could be regarded as an area, in which the ‘true identity’ of the German people needed to be awaken, who mistakenly thought of themselves as Ukrainians, which I personally do not believe. They knew who, in fact, they were.
The head of the SS, Heinrich Himmler, enthusiastically supported such a view, and even managed to convince Hitler to this idea or vision, who certainly agreed and approved of it. After all, he was an Austrian and saw Galicia as a lost province.
The alleged “Aryan” Ukrainians
The recruitment, however, could go ahead under one strict condition. Himmler and Hitler agreed to create the Galizien division, not Ukrainian. And contrary to popular opinion it served exactly as such! Himmler banned outright the use of terms such as “Ukrainian division” or “Ukrainian people” – both in conversations and documents. There was no name of Ukraine or Ukrainians in the new division, whose formation began in the early months of 1943. All members were described as Galicians.
Not even Ukrainian regional and traditional symbol was present. As Christopher Hale wrote, the Governor, Wächter decided on using only the old symbol of Austrian Galicia, which was the golden lion, and not the Ukrainian tribal emblem of Tryzub.

Surprisingly, the rest of tribal Ukrainians did not realised that the proposed idea was aimed, in fact, at the acceleration to exterminate the Slavic Ukrainians, and strengthen the position of Nazi empire in the Eastern Europe.
Furthermore, Himmler admitted, that the task of 14 Grenadier Division of SS “Galizien” is to acquaint the Germanic and mixed Germano-Ukrainian population with the concept of being Germans.
Despite this, during a month of recruitment a trifle – 81 999 Ukrainians have signed up – Boys ready to give their lives for Hitler and for … Galicia.
