Intelligence, wisdom & Civilisation

This is in response to a commentator, Ion, who accuses Slavs, especially Polish Slavs of being the primitive backward Eastern Europeans who needed German colonisation and the introduction of their superior German civilisation. Hmmm….

Here is his part of his comment:
“ …The Germanic peoples consider themselves superior to the backwards and less intelligent Slavs particularly in countries that had a large ethnically German population such as Poland, which by and large prior the emergence of the quasi Polish state following WW1, had been settled and civilized by Germans. …many people of different races and nationalities say “Godforsaken backwards Eastern Europe!”

One thus gets an impression that civilization is something which was imposed on a resisting majority by a minority which understood how to obtain possession of the means to power and coercion.

What do we mean when we talk of a civilization? A civilization is a cultural entity. Villages, regions, ethnic groups, nationalities, religious groups, all have distinct cultures at different levels of cultural heterogeneity. The culture of a village in southern Italy may be different from that of a village in northern Italy, but both will share in a common Italian culture that distinguishes them from German villages. European communities, in turn, will share cultural features that distinguish them from Arab or Chinese communities. Arabs, Chinese and Westerners, however, are not part of any broader cultural entity. They constitute civilizations. A civilization is thus the highest cultural grouping of people and the broadest level of cultural identity people have short of that which distinguishes humans from other species. It is defined both by common objective elements, such as language, history, religion, customs, institutions, and by the subjective self-identification of people. Civilizations are differentiated from each other by history, language, culture, tradition and, most important, religion. These differences are the product of centuries.
If we focus primarily on the social sciences, the term civilization is used to indicate a high state of progress – a certain level of social, cultural, political, economic and technological evolution that differentiates us from early cultures as well as current primitive communities that stay more or less isolated from what we call the modern world. Nevertheless, we must take into account that the word civilization can be also used in a broader sense: to denote the set of ideas, knowledge, values, institutions and achievements of a society at a certain time. The idea that civilization equates to the summit of human development is long established in our history and relates directly to the rise of cities and states.
This process of civilization charts mankind’s drastic change from primitive existence into a complex world of increasing material welfare: man now controlled and exploited his surroundings, transforming them into a somewhat artificial environment.
Every new civilization established itself by building on the legacy of its predecessors and raising itself to new heights. Mesopotamia and Egypt were unrivaled in their own times, but in the fifth century BC Classical Greece arose and brought with it democracy, art, philosophy and science. Athens, and later Rome, spread civilization throughout the Mediterranean Sea, forever changing the face of Europe.
There are countless different cultures with their own customs and values, the Western civilization has in-arguably permeated and altered even the furthest of these.
This historical review may lead us to conclude that civilization is the logical progression of mankind from a state of mere subsistence to a complex culture in which scientific and technological progressions enable a much easier standard of living. However, we should question whether we should really consider progress and civilization to be synonymous. There is no doubt that evolutionary ideology enhanced the idea that man progresses through history and therefore some societies are feel themselves superior to others simply because they are civilized. Civilization represents progress, and the higher degree of civilization, the higher degree of progress for everyone. However, we must question this presumption and ask whether the evolutionary paradigm, first developed in the West during a period of marked euro-centrism, is compromised when applied to the history of civilizations.
History demonstrates that societies who considered themselves to be “civilized” did not hesitate to impose their own custom and value systems on those “wild” or ‘backward’ people and societies that they considered less evolved. Though this behavior is perhaps most relatable to European colonialism, it is evident in very different contexts, throughout history and all over the world. For example, the admired Aztec civilization is also renowned for its heavy handed imperialism and for the mass human sacrifices which horrified the Spanish conquistadors; and yet, it is documented that when the Aztecs became the conquered, they too were subjected to abuse, genocide and slavery by the so called “civilized” Spanish. Therefore, it could be said that cultural evolutionism is just a qualification “in scientific terms” of this long-established imperialist attitude. Global imperialism was justified in this way with the belief that the spread of “civilization” meant progress for all, even though the means was often marked by extreme abuses to those this “progress” was imposed upon. Indeed, civilization has not been an easy ride, because in most cases it has involved a political-economic conquest – often by force of arms – which has radically changed lifestyles and created new problems to overlay supposed existing problems. The echo of this often unwelcome civilized aggression is still heard today in the cry of resistance of many indigenous communities to their cultural invaders all over the world. Instead of seeing the “benefits” of civilization, these people see only the loss of their own beliefs and traditions, and as seems common to all, the loss of their intimate bond with Earth and nature, with their identity, heritage and their own culture. It is important not to condemn the wonders of civilization so long it is introduced in a peaceful, co-operational and educational manner. In spite of recognizing many positive or desirable outcomes of civilization, it is impossible not to feel some uneasiness, from a historical perspective, at its great contradictions: the wars, genocide, intolerance, poverty, corruption, destruction and persecution which have resulted in its name. If we concede that man progresses, how can we equate this with the 20th century’s “civilized” world which has suffered two brutal world wars with millions of victims?
Are Hiroshima and Nagasaki symbols of civilization?
How could an advanced and “civilized” nation such as modern Germany could fall into the moral barbarism of Nazism?
Is the global pollution and irrational use of natural resources civilized behavior?
Can the complex international financial system be the solution to the crisis created by itself?
And why is this world civilization, with many international organizations, incapable of ending the famine and poverty in so many countries?
In short, how can we talk about civilization if, for so many, the human condition has not substantially improved since the time of the Pharaohs?
The accumulation of knowledge and material achievements for the privileged minority cannot justify an apparent lack of spiritual progress and human empathy. A voice that resonates inside us tells us that this cannot be civilization.
In this civilized world of immediate satisfaction, we think that having a powerful car, a new cell phone or a 3D TV means our lifestyle is far superior to that of indigenous people living in the deep jungle. It is true, we have more possessions, but does this equate to more happiness? Beyond this material wealth, humans still live and die as they did two, three or five thousand years ago. Civilization, as a frame of human existence in the past 5,000 years, has not only failed to connect us to our inner being, but is still unable to erase all of the problems our species faces. In fact, the development of civilization has offered us several political-economic systems (including revolutions) which have ‘supposedly’ tried to improve human existence, but they have not been successful. Perhaps this is because they have not reached the heart of the matter: man must first be transformed inside in order to change the world around him. The high intellect of a human is not enough here. This must be combined with a WISDOM, KINDNESS and JUST.
Intelligence and wisdom are two qualities that are attached with the mental capabilities and skills of human beings. Intelligence can be learned via books, experience and it evaluates with the passage of time.
Intelligence is about knowing others while wisdom is about knowing yourself.
Intelligent person focuses more on the tangible things. It is like body while wisdom is about intangible things like soul.
Intelligence has limits but wisdom is limitless.
Intelligence can be used in positive and negative sense. It can be useful and harmful while wisdom has always positive effects.
Intelligent person rules over the world. Wiser rules over the history.
Intelligence is the next stage of knowledge while wisdom is the final stage.
Intelligence is a theoretical knowledge while wisdom is a practical knowledge.

Intelligence can help in the accumulation of knowledge, but intelligence does not automatically create knowledge.
Furthermore, intelligence is irrelevant to experience and has only a marginal relationship to good judgment.
Why do so many leading public figures do such crazy, self-destructive things?
Not because they’re stupid, but because they’re foolish.

“Knowledge without wisdom is a load of books on the back of an ass.”

The smart fool knows more facts than you and believes his superior grasp of facts makes your opinion meaningless. As in the contexts of; I used to think I knew about war — until I went to war. I used to think I knew about helping the poor — until I tried to help the poor. I used to think I knew about what it meant to be a husband and father — until I became a husband and father. The list can go on, of course, but whatever intelligence I possessed didn’t make me wise.
As an example, what can one say about Hitler or Stalin?
Were they intelligent? They certainly were, otherwise they would have never been able to hold leadership positions. But they were dangerous and evil.
Were they wise? You be the judge.
Wisdom is the “quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment.”
We should all endeavour to live in a “reality-based community,” but we hurt the nation and the culture when we lionize the smart fool and elevate his counsel over that of the wise.

Wisdom corresponds to the Latin ‘sapientia’ that has the same root of the verb ‘sapio’ that means ‘taste’, Latin was a language born among shepards (this is why egregious comes from ex-grege , i.e. a sheep distinguishing from the other shepps because it is out (ex) from the flock (grege)), if you have wisdom (sapientia) you have a personal and unique ‘taste’ like a specific cheese made by an expert shepard, this implies you not only have the knowledge and intelligence of facts but, much more importantly, you re-elaborate them giving them your unique touch , so a wise person is not someone that knows a lot of things, but someone that has completely assimilate experiences and is able to give them back in a unique way, making his unique soul to be evident.

Thus to be wise is much more than to be intelligent…
Intelligence is adeptness in problem-solving and gaining factual information. It is “technical”. Wisdom is the ability of using the gained knowledge in making good decisions and guiding oneself through life. It also involves knowledge of one’s own capacities and ethical sensitivity. It is “practical”.
There are many people who blindly follow what they know without having the experience to wisely apply that knowledge. This is impossible to understand for some young people.

Many mentally challenged people are wise enough to know their limitations and need to ask for help. There are many intelligent people who lack this wisdom.

While we make intelligent plans, life seems to just laugh at us. Intelligence indicate knowledge. Wisdom is the proper use of knowledge. Not every intelligent man is a wise man but a wise man must surely first be intelligent.
Intelligence is perhaps the possibility to think and apply correctly for solving a problem, wisdom requires knowing a solution, still act in a different way. Looks like as if intelligence could be for self whereas wisdom is for society and humanity.
An intelligent person would solve the problem however, a wise person, would avoid such problem first and foremost, and sought others intelligent enough to solve for them.
Why wars cannot be avoided? Because we have greedy, corrupted fools for leaders.
Intelligence is how you perform in different fields compared to others when it comes to knowledge, problem solving etc. Wisdom is expertise knowledge in one or more domains, being able to teach and create new knowledge.
Wisdom is superior born out of “experience” which gives the power of assessing ,if a solution is morally and ethically acceptable. Hence “intelligence” can be found in the “young “whereas “wisdom” requires time and usually found in the “old”.

Knowledge without wisdom can be pointless. But worse than that, it can be dangerous.
Take Stalin. He began to study at a theological seminary, where he started reading Marxist literature, and was expelled for ‘revolutionary activities’. Stalin developed strong ideals, and based on these he killed thousands if not millions and exiled millions to slave labour camps – the infamous gulags.
So was Hitler.
Countless others through the years, including those claiming to act on behalf of God or other high principles, have carried out terrible crimes. Tragically for many, any knowledge they had was not accompanied by wisdom or love.
Theoretical physicist Victor Frederick Weisskopf agreed, “Compassion without knowledge is ineffective; knowledge without compassion is inhuman.”
“Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit; Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.”
Knowledge can be dangerous. Smart people can do monumentally stupid things. Intelligence can be put to a bad use. But this doesn’t mean that knowledge and intelligence are to be avoided. It means only that they need the proper accompaniment – wisdom.
There may be nothing more valuable, in business and life, than true wisdom.
A wise person discerns good from bad, right from wrong, appropriate from inappropriate, better from worse, and favorable from unfavorable, as well as many other differences, in a way that foolish people can’t. And that’s a matter of judgment and understanding. For true wisdom to be present, thought and action have to mesh. Knowledge without wisdom, just like action without wisdom, can take a person, or an organization, off the rails as quickly as anything. Because of this, as well as for many more reasons, we ought to be hiring for wisdom, training for wisdom, promoting wisdom, and encouraging it in every way we can, in business, politics, and our personal lives. Any other course is, of course, unwise.

“Never speak out of anger,
Never act out of fear,
Never choose from impatience,
But wait… and peace will appear.”
–Guy Finley

“Persons of high self-esteem are not driven to make themselves superior to others; they do not seek to prove their value by measuring themselves against a comparative standard. Their joy is being who they are, not in being better than someone else.”

Here are the top nine ways human intelligence could eventually bring about its own destruction.

  1. Nuclear armageddon
  2. Global Ecophagy
  3. Everybody uploads, but no one is conscious- artificial general intelligence
  4. Robopocalypse – Also known as the Terminator scenario, advanced artificial intelligence
  5. Artificial super-intelligence
Somewhat related to the robopocalypse, the day is coming when artificial intelligence will surpass human capacities. In such a scenario, a machine intelligence would rework our entire infrastructure to meet its needs. We would be completely unable to contain it.
  6. Particle accelerator accident
Though highly unlikely, there is the remote possibility that we could destroy the Earth while conducting a high-energy particle experiment.
  7. Deliberately engineered pandemic
“The genome is essentially the design of a weapon of mass destruction.
  8. Anthropogenic global warming
  9. World War III

Of the 70 million people who were killed in WWII, about 20 million died from starvation. And disturbingly, civilians accounted for nearly 50 percent of all deaths — a stark indication that war isn’t just for soldiers any more.
Given the incredible degree to which technology has advanced in the nearly seven decades since this war, it’s reasonable to assume that the next global ‘conventional war’ — i.e. one fought without nuclear weapons — would be near apocalyptic in scope. The degree of human suffering that could be unleashed would easily surpass anything that came before it, with combatants using many of the technologies already described in this list, including autonomous killing machines and weaponized nanotechnology. And in various acts of desperation (or sheer malevolence), some belligerent nations could choose to unleash chemical and biological agents that would result in countless deaths. And like WWII, food could be used as a weapon; agricultural yields could be brought to a grinding halt.
Again and again we have seen philosophers and politicians make the same mistake when seeking to create a utopia. Thus, socialist ideology, which should have released humanity from the evils of western civilization, became a monster that forced men and women to live a materialistic and oppressive existence. Communism in the USSR demonstrates this clearly: this workers’ paradise was a totalitarian state that created its own imperialist policy all around the globe. At the end, the freedom of its people was hugely limited; they suffered very poor living conditions and terrible periods of political repression.
So, we see that civilization, in many forms throughout history, has completely failed to eliminate the selfishness and apparent need for confrontation that are at root of so many of humanity’s problems. Moreover, the arrival of capitalism in the recent centuries has only enhanced these negative attributes to land us in our current climate of consumerism and free economy where, while millions suffer famine around the world, huge quantities of food are destroyed in “civilized” countries in order to control the prices in the stock market. If we look at it like this, it is clear that somewhere along the line the evolution of civilization has gone very wrong; it hasn’t been able to improve the happiness of humanity at large, and it has not been able to provide a decent standard of living for all, instead it has just greatened the distance between rich and poor and increased the depths of human selfishness. The modern civilized world looks like an astounding technological facade with no values or spirit behind it, except the materialist motivations. Many people grow up having nothing at all, not even hope.
Today some German journalists and pseudo-historians embarked on a rewriting of the history of Germany aiming to prove the imperative necessity of Lebenraum, Second World War and the colonisation of Eastern Europe, whitewashing at the same time atrocities committed by the German army.
Since 1933, the German elite under the leadership of Hitler and the Nazi Party have shown to what savage depths, what abrogation of civilization, the German National Socialism has had to descend in order to maintain its grip upon the wealth and the people of Europe. What good has the introduction of nazi civilisation brought to Europe?

The Nazi empire was created by violence, lived by violence and was destroyed by violence.

Rarely can an empire have existed about which nothing positive could be said. While in prison, Adolf Hitler dreamed of building a vast German Empire sprawling across Central and Eastern Europe imposing its German civilisation of destruction. His desire to annihilate whole races of inferior peoples marked a break from the outlook of the old order.
At the outbreak of war in 1939, Britain ruled over the largest colonial empire in history, holding more millions of people against their will than any regime before or since. This vast empire included what is now India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and South Africa. The Soviet Union, was, by any objective measure, the most tyrannical or oppressive regime of its time, and a vastly more cruel despotism than Hitler’s Germany. Robert Conquest, a prominent scholar of twentieth century Russian history, estimates the number of those who lost their lives as a consequence of Stalin’s policies as “no fewer than 20 million.” / 11
These is what human intelligence is capable of.
Is there any wisdom in it?

Now that we have all seen this scenario, perhaps it’s time to raise fearlessly a new vision, one where we have the right to judge and reject the “civilized world” for directly undermining the moral essence of man. The transformation of civilization it’s not about any kind of revolution, but about changing our focus from matter to spirit. Thus, in order to live in harmony with everyone and with our environment, in the mythical realm of the so-called “Golden Age”, we must transform our conscience. The first step in this global shift should be a personal commitment in our public and private behavior to live in alignment with love, dignity, solidarity, decency, honesty, and sincerity.
To be able to live in our own lands and our communities unmolested by other unwanted civilisations. Only then will humanity be on the right path, in a world that will not perhaps require large cities or flashy gadgets, but will give equality and harmony to human communities and spiritual meaning to our lives.
